Product Info

This tour allows you to walk with a guide along the section of the Shin-etsu Main Line between Karuizawa and Yokokawa, which was closed in 1997. Starting near the top of the Usui Pass, you will walk along the uphill track toward Toge-no-Yu. We will meet at the Karuizawa Station North Exit and guide you to the starting point, so you can rest assured! For lunch, you will enjoy a 'Toge no Kamameshi' at the former Kumanodaira Station, served in a special package exclusive to this abandoned line walk. While the Megane Bridge is not clearly visible from the uphill track, the final tunnel contains a spot that can only be seen on this route: the scars from the freight electric locomotive derailment and overturn accident that occurred on October 28, 1975. The tour concludes at Toge-no-Yu, where you are free to disperse. Afterward, you can reach Yokokawa Station by walking along the 'Apt Road' in about 45 minutes. To avoid crowding, we use guide earphones so you can hear explanations clearly even from a distance. There will be time to take photos while listening to the guide share railway history and various anecdotes about the surrounding area. Additionally, thanks to special cooperation, the signals are currently lit. It is about a 45-minute walk to Yokokawa Station. A trolley train to the Railway Culture Village also departs from the Toge-no-Yu goal point. The cost is 1400 yen including fare and admission. Please check the Railway Culture Village website for operating days. The last train departs at 15:40. We expect to arrive at Toge-no-Yu at 15:00, but depending on the group's pace, it may be earlier. In that case, you can also take the 14:40 departure.
Abandoned tracks that are only accessible during this event
You will love the extraordinary feeling of entering a place that is usually off-limits. With railway tracks and equipment from the time still remaining, you can enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere amidst the ruins and discarded juice bottles. You can see the remains of the derailment accident, which are usually impossible to view. It is also fun to photograph railway ruins from angles only possible in these restricted areas.

This is a tour that visits abandoned railway tracks that are only permitted to be entered during the event.

After the famous 'Toge no Kamameshi' lunch, enjoy a video screening inside the tunnel.

After passing through the long tunnel, the goal is the day-trip hot spring facility 'Toge no Yu'.

As the course is an abandoned line where tracks are still laid, strollers and wheelchairs cannot be brought in.
