- About Tomioka Silk Mill -
Tomioka Silk Mill was a government-run model silk factory established by the Meiji government to modernize Japan.
In 2014, the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Silk Industry Heritage Sites were registered as a World Heritage Site.
The three buildings that are designated as national treasures are the silk reeling factory, the east cocoon factory, and the west cocoon factory.
In particular, the West Cocoon Warehouse has a glass room that utilizes steel frames for earthquake reinforcement, allowing you to experience the National Treasure building through the glass.
Among the exhibits are some that give a glimpse into the lives of the "factory girls" of the time, and you can enjoy touring the entire silk mill while imagining what life was like back then.
The building contains a document exhibition room and a multipurpose hall, where lectures and concerts are sometimes held.
*During the event period, you may not be able to enter the multipurpose hall depending on the content.

National Treasure, East Cocoon Storehouse: Built using a timber-framed brick construction method, this building was used to store cocoons over 100 meters in length.
National Treasure - Silk Reeling Plant: This is the place where raw silk was extracted from cocoons. Currently, an automatic silk reeling machine is preserved here.
National Treasure, West Cocoon Storehouse: Like the East Cocoon Storehouse, this building was used to store cocoons. Preservation and maintenance work was completed in 2020, and the building was grandly reopened.

Food and drinks cannot be brought into the Tomioka Silk Mill.
You can bring in drinks (such as plastic bottles with lids).
Customers who purchase tickets online will not be given paper tickets. If you would like a paper ticket, please speak to us at the counter. Please note that when receiving your paper ticket, you will have to line up in the same line as customers purchasing tickets at the counter.
