At the agreed time, we'll meet at the Quinta Normal metro station, from where we'll start exploring the murals, museums, and hidden corners of the Yungay neighborhood, a symbol of Santiago's cultural identity. Let's go!
Just a few steps from the station, you'll admire the Hospital San Juan de Dios, founded in 1552. This is the oldest sanatorium in Chile and one of the oldest in South America, a key part of the public health network and a milestone in the country's medical history.
Then, we'll head to the Gabriela Mistral Education Museum, a space that pays tribute to the poet. Outside, we'll talk about the importance of this iconic woman in Latin American literature for Chilean education. Then, we'll stop to admire the charming Tetería Cleopatra, a tea house that will transport us to another era and a frequent meeting place among the inhabitants of the Yungay neighborhood.
Our next stop will be the Pasaje Adriana Cousiño, built in the 1920s. Made up of small terraced houses, gardens, and shared benches, it retains the community spirit of the last century, which today contrasts with Santiago's contemporary buildings. We'll also visit Pasaje Lucrecia Valdés, another example of traditional architecture that survives amidst the city's modernization.
Our walking tour will continue to the Patricio Bustos Mural, a work of street art that reflects the spirit of the neighborhood and its social and cultural struggles. Afterwards, we'll visit the Museo del Sonido, a museum dedicated to the preservation of old sound reproduction equipment. Next, we'll pass by the famous Peluquería Francesa, a historic hairdresser that also functions as a restaurant and bar, and admire the exterior of the traditional Fuente Mardoqueo restaurant, known for its delicious Chilean-style sandwiches.
Then, we'll head to Plaza Yungay, the heart of the neighborhood, surrounded by trees and historic buildings like the Palacio del Álamo and the beautiful Capuchin Church. After a two-and-a-half-hour tour, we'll say goodbye at this temple, a true treasure in the center of Santiago.
