Product Info

In the Middle Ages, there were many spices to buy at the market in Nuremberg. Nuremberg's central location at the crossroads of the most important long-distance trade routes brought great wealth to the city.
From surviving lists of ship cargoes, we know that saffron, ginger, frankincense, and many other exotic spices also came to us via the Silk Road and Venice. But why were the patrician families (e.g., the Tuchers, Imhoffs, Behaims) who traded in these called "pepper sacks"? And why do we have over 600 years of tradition in gingerbread and bratwurst in Nuremberg of all places?

Join us on a walk through Nuremberg's historic center and learn exciting, interesting, and entertaining facts about the trade routes, the wholesalers, and, of course, the spices.
