Elmina is Ghana's oldest European settlement - founded by the Portuguese in 1471 - and most visitors only scratch the surface. This private full-day tour goes deeper, combining the castle, a boat cruise on the lagoon, a hilltop colonial church, the Dutch Cemetery, and a walk through one of West Africa's most historic fishing townships.

Elmina Castle - Begin inside the walls of the oldest building in sub-Saharan Africa. Alfred guides you through the slave dungeons, the Door of No Return, the Governor's quarters, and the chapel built directly above the female slave dungeon. This is an emotionally powerful, deeply personal experience - not a rushed group tour.

Benya Lagoon Boat Cruise - Board a private boat with Captain Prince and glide past the castle walls from the water. See the colourful fishing canoes, the bustling harbour, and St. Joseph's Church crowning the hill above - a perspective of Elmina that most visitors never experience. Life jackets provided.

Dutch Cemetery - Walk around one of Elmina's most haunting landmarks. Behind ornate ironwork gates bearing a Dutch inscription - "O Welcoming Mother Receive Your Children Again" - lie the graves of Dutch colonial officers who never returned home. St. Joseph's Church and Elmina Castle are visible together through the gate, creating one of the most powerful visual moments of the tour.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church - Climb to this stunning colonial-era church built by European missionaries on Elmina's highest hill. From its terrace, the entire township unfolds below - the Dutch Cemetery, the castle, the lagoon, the fishing harbour, and the Atlantic Ocean stretching to the horizon. The church grounds feature a remarkable row of historical busts - one of Elmina's most overlooked and photographed hidden gems.

Elmina Township Walk - Walk through the ancient fishing township with Alfred. Meet local fishermen, see traditional canoe building, and experience the genuine daily rhythm of one of Ghana's oldest towns.

Local Lunch - End with a fresh seafood or jollof rice, chicken or fish with kelewele for lunch at an Elmina waterfront restaurant, watching the fishing boats come in from the Atlantic.

This is Elmina the way locals know it - from every angle, at your own pace, with a guide born and raised in this region.

Pickup available from Accra, Cape Coast and Takoradi Harbour.
