Product Info
Nuremberg was first documented in 975. Within a few centuries, the city grew to become the second-largest city in medieval Germany and one of the most important trading centers in Europe. On this private walking tour, you will discover what remains of this history in the alleys, walls, and churches of the Old Town today.
We will start at the Old Town Hall, where justice was administered and policy was made in the Middle Ages. From there, we will walk through the narrow streets of the old imperial city up to the Imperial Castle. From this castle, the Holy Roman Emperors ruled. The view from above reveals why this exact location was chosen and how the city developed around the castle over the centuries.
Along the way, we will pass St. Sebald's Church and St. Lawrence's Church, two of the oldest churches in Germany, the Hauptmarkt with the beautiful fountain, and Albrecht Dürer's House, where Nuremberg's most famous artist lived and worked. At each stop, you will learn about the role the site played in the Middle Ages and what original features of it remain to this day.
Because that's the second story this tour tells: On January 2, 1945, over 90% of the Old Town was destroyed. Much of what you see today was deliberately rebuilt after the war. On site, I will show you exactly where the line between the original and the reconstructed lies. The tour is private. You determine the pace and the focus of the tour. At the end, I will be happy to give you personalized recommendations for restaurants, museums, and anything else to enhance your stay in Nuremberg.
