The Shimazu Residence in Miyakonojo City houses what are claimed to be the 'limbs' of a Kappa, a legend stemming from Japanese folklore. These alleged Kappa body parts are considered proof of their existence, making Miyakonojo City a significant location for exploring Kappa legends. By visiting the residence, you can personally experience the historical mystery and understand the cultural significance and local beliefs surrounding Kappa.
In Japanese Kappa legends, the 'Shirikodama' is a key concept, said to be located deep within the anus and considered a delicacy by Kappas. Kappas are believed to extract the 'Shirikodama' through the anus, causing the victim to lose vitality or even die. This legend reflects ancient Japanese fears of waterborne dangers and gives the Kappa a mysterious yet malevolent image, making it a unique and widely known part of Japanese Yokai culture.
Kappas in Japanese legends are described as omnivorous aquatic creatures. Their favorite food is cucumbers, which is why cucumbers are often offered to Kappas in many parts of Japan. Additionally, they are believed to prey on fish and even have the bad habit of extracting the 'Shirikodama' from humans. Kappas typically inhabit bodies of water like rivers and ponds, and they have a 'dish' on their heads that holds water, which sustains their strength.
The name 'Kappa' is believed to originate from 'Kawataro' (河太郎), meaning 'child of the river.' In Japanese, 'kawa' (河) means river, and 'do' (童) refers to a child, directly pointing to their aquatic and childlike characteristics. This name often has different variations in dialects across Japan, but the core concept always refers to these legendary creatures that inhabit watersides and resemble children, deeply rooted in Japanese folk beliefs and stories.
One of the core experiences of Miyakonojo City's 'Kappa Mysterious Journey' is exploring the Kappa legends through your senses along the rivers of Mimata Town and Osada Gorge.
