The SSI Mermaid Course involves comprehensive training covering theoretical knowledge, confined water skills, and practical application. Participants learn about mermaid equipment, safety protocols, breath-holding techniques, and effective finning. Upon successfully meeting all performance requirements, including demonstrating underwater skills and safety procedures, you will earn an internationally recognized SSI Mermaid certification.
To enroll in the SSI Mermaid Explorer Course, participants need to be at least 6 years old. They should possess basic swimming abilities, meaning they can swim 25 meters unassisted and tread water comfortably for a few minutes. No prior experience with mermaid swimming is required, making it ideal for beginners interested in this unique activity.
Participating in SSI Mermaid swimming offers excellent full-body conditioning. It significantly strengthens your core muscles, improves leg and glute power through continuous finning, and enhances cardiovascular endurance. Regular mermaid swimming also boosts flexibility, coordination, and overall aquatic fitness, contributing to a fun and active lifestyle.
The SSI Mermaid Course focuses on teaching essential skills for graceful and efficient mermaid swimming. You will learn proper mermaid finning techniques, effective underwater propulsion, and fluid body movements. Additionally, the course covers breath-holding basics for comfortable underwater time, and safety procedures specific to confined water environments, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
After obtaining your initial SSI Mermaid certification, you can pursue various advanced pathways. These include the Ocean Mermaid course for open water experiences, allowing you to explore natural aquatic environments. For those interested in professional opportunities, there are further options to become an SSI Mermaid Instructor or a Model Mermaid, opening doors to diverse career paths.
While comfort in the water and basic swimming skills are necessary, a high level of advanced swimming fitness is not a prerequisite for starting the SSI Mermaid Course. The program is structured to gradually build your abilities from foundational techniques in a controlled pool environment. Participants should be able to swim 25 meters and tread water comfortably.
SSI Mermaid Courses integrate fundamental breath-holding and free diving principles in a safe, supervised setting. Instructors guide participants through proper breathing and relaxation techniques, focusing on increasing breath-hold duration while maintaining comfort and safety. Emphasis is placed on controlled movements and understanding personal limits underwater, with constant supervision to ensure a secure learning environment.
During the SSI Mermaid Course sessions, participants are provided with key equipment essential for the experience. This typically includes a mermaid monoweb, which is a specialized single-blade fin, and a vibrant fabric mermaid tail. These tools enable the unique propulsion and aesthetic of mermaid swimming. Snorkels and masks are also commonly used for optimal underwater vision and comfort during training.
