-About the Museum-
Designed by architect Tadao Ando, the He Art Museum (HEM) covers a total area of approximately 16,000 square meters, with exhibition spaces spanning about 8,000 square meters. By utilizing fair-faced concrete as the primary building material, Mr. Ando has integrated natural elements such as light, water, and wind into a museum that embodies the cultural spirit of Lingnan architecture.
The architectural design of HEM blends contrasting features, forming a structure composed of simple circles and squares. The central circle shifts its center of gravity and scale as it rises, creating an effect that slowly radiates from the inside out, from the building to the city. This is a tribute to the ancient Chinese architectural concept of 'Heaven is round, Earth is square,' and a symbolic intersection of pure geometric solids that creates a landscape reflecting Lingnan architectural culture and a celebration of light and shadow.
· Double-Helix Fair-Faced Concrete Staircase
From the details to the overall composition, and even the landscape design, the building unfolds in layers like ripples on water. At its center lies a five-story cylindrical void. The double-helix staircase spirals down, forming the central circular space. Resembling a DNA structure, this fair-faced concrete double-helix staircase is a breathtaking highlight of the HEM architecture and a testament to the leap in China's construction technology.
· The Garden of the Shore
The circulation path of the Garden of the Shore evokes the poetic charm of a winding path leading to a secluded spot. Curved fair-faced concrete walls are arranged and wrapped around the garden in an orderly fashion, complemented by carefully selected pink-flowering trees, making visitors feel as if they are wandering through a poetic landscape, reminiscent of discovering a peach blossom grove. In this outdoor space, the landscape design centers on water features; the circular pond, which echoes the 'round' theme, serves as a hydrophilic installation to mitigate the intense heat of the subtropical summer. At the same time, when the building is reflected on the water's surface, it becomes a unique base for the structure.
