  • Sengan-en Garden

Built in 1658 by Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimadzu clan, this garden offers a stunning view of Sakurajima and is one of the most iconic landscapes in Kagoshima Prefecture. Spanning 15,000 tsubo, the garden features vibrant flowers throughout the seasons, as well as the Shoko Shuseikan Museum and the Goten, which house historical documents and cultural heritage related to the Satsuma Domain's Shimadzu family. As a site that led Japan's modernization, this area was designated as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2015.

  • Shoko Shuseikan Museum

Nariakira, the 28th head of the Shimadzu family, believed that Japan needed to become a strong and prosperous nation to compete with foreign powers. He built a group of modern factories near the Goten and the garden, known as the 'Shuseikan'. Believing that modernization was essential for Japan's independence, he focused on projects directly related to military strength, such as iron smelting and shipbuilding, and actively introduced Western technology. The factory complex, which included reverberatory furnaces, blast furnaces, glass factories, textile mills, and steam locomotive manufacturing plants, was collectively known as the 'Shuseikan'. The entire project was called the 'Shuseikan Project'. The oldest remaining 'Western-style factory' among the complex is now the 'Shoko Shuseikan Main Building', serving as a valuable museum that provides insight into the history of Japan's modernization.

  • Goten (Shimadzu Family Residence)

The Goten, where the Shimadzu lords lived after absorbing Western culture in Kagoshima, served as a guesthouse for domestic and international visitors from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji Restoration. It is a precious building where the architecture, design, and furniture of the samurai residence allow visitors to feel the presence and lifestyle of the lords from different eras.
