- Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition
The Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition is a traditional fireworks competition with a long history. It is not only one of the three major fireworks festivals in Japan but also one of the three major competitive fireworks events in the country. The competition began in 1925 (Taisho 14), when the head priest of Shoryu-ji Temple in Tsuchiura City, Umine Akimoto, organized this grand fireworks display at his own expense along the shores of Lake Kasumigaura to revitalize the local shopping district, which had been devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake. Gathering numerous highly skilled pyrotechnicians, the Tsuchiura Fireworks Competition is a top-tier event in Japan in terms of both quality and scale, offering a dreamlike feast of light and sound. The competition is divided into three categories: 'Star Mine (Rapid-fire Fireworks)', '10-go Tama (12-inch Shells)', and 'Creative Fireworks'. Winners receive prestigious awards such as the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award. Among these, the most outstanding work across all three categories is awarded the 'Prime Minister's Award', the highest honor that pyrotechnicians across Japan strive to achieve. During the event, pyrotechnicians use their ultimate techniques to deliver a diverse and breathtaking display. Judging criteria for each category include creativity, color, precision, and the rhythm and impact of the performance.
