Day 1 Airport Pick-up: Fairbanks Airport. Pick-up time: 13:00 – 21:00 (based on flight arrival time). If you do not require pick-up, please proceed to the hotel for check-in on your own (check-in at hotels in Alaska is available after 15:00).
Each booking includes one complimentary airport pick-up service on the day of arrival. Guests with similar flight arrival times will share the same shuttle, which may result in a short wait at the airport. We appreciate your understanding.
As night falls, to avoid urban light pollution, we plan to depart at 22:00 for our carefully selected Aurora Viewing Cabin*. Its prime location increases your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights. Our professional aurora guide will introduce you to the knowledge of the Northern Lights, camera settings, and photography tips to help you capture stunning photos. The cabin provides complimentary hot drinks, coffee, and an aurora monitoring screen, allowing you to wait for the Northern Lights in warmth (1st Aurora Viewing, cost included). We expect to arrive back at the hotel around 02:00 the next morning.
You may choose to upgrade to the hilltop Aurora Glass Igloo for an additional fee. Each glass igloo is unobstructed, offering guests a superb viewing experience. The rooms are well-equipped: underfloor heating covers the entire space to ensure warmth and comfort; American breakfast, private shower, and 24-hour hot water are provided. The bathroom is equipped with a high-altitude hair dryer and practical amenities, greatly enhancing the comfort of your stay.
Of the 3 nights of aurora viewing included in the original itinerary, one night can be upgraded to an Aurora Glass Igloo viewing and stay. We recommend that guests bring only a small amount of carry-on luggage, as your original hotel room will be reserved for you, making it convenient to store large baggage.
*Warm Reminder: Hotel room availability is limited. Please double-check available dates with customer service before placing your order.
Day 2 Fairbanks
Today, you will enjoy a leisurely morning at the hotel. We expect to depart from the designated hotel at 13:00 and head to the famous North Pole, also known as the 'Santa Claus House'. To create a rich Christmas atmosphere in Santa's hometown, a 16-meter-tall giant Santa Claus statue, as well as 2-meter-tall polar bear and reindeer statues, have been specially built here. Many surrounding public facilities also feature Christmas motifs, making you feel as if you are in a fairy tale world. Afterward, you will follow your guide to the Museum of the North* located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. This is the best place for visitors to explore the mysterious Arctic world and the authentic lives of early locals. The museum's exterior features white lines and curves, mimicking the snow-covered landscape of the Arctic region. Under the sunlight, it reflects a dazzling glow, making it one of the landmarks of Fairbanks. The museum is divided into different exhibition halls, which not only provide detailed introductions to the geographical and historical changes of the Arctic region but also display precious Arctic animal specimens that we can usually only see in books (Blue Babe, mammoth, a brown bear nearly 3 meters tall, etc.), which are particularly attractive to visitors. Afterward, you will be dropped off at the hotel to rest. (If the Museum of the North is closed, we will arrange for you to visit the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and refund the $15 admission fee for the Museum of the North on-site.)
As night falls, to avoid urban light pollution, we plan to head to the areas surrounding Fairbanks at 22:00. Our professional aurora guide will take you to the most effective areas for viewing the aurora based on the day's weather, the direction of the aurora, and their extensive experience in chasing the lights. During this time, we will also introduce you to the knowledge of the Northern Lights, camera settings, and photography tips to help you capture stunning photos (2nd Aurora Viewing, cost included). We expect to arrive back at the hotel around 02:00 the next morning.
Day 3 Fairbanks
Today, you will enjoy a leisurely day in Fairbanks. You may arrange your own activities or participate in local winter specialty projects at your own expense. The cabin provides complimentary hot drinks, coffee, and an aurora monitoring screen, allowing you to wait for the Northern Lights in warmth (3rd Aurora Viewing, cost included). We expect to arrive back at the hotel around 02:00 the next morning.
Day 4 Fairbanks
Today, you will enjoy a leisurely day in Fairbanks.
Day 5 Fairbanks - Anchorage
In the morning, take the Alaska Aurora Winter Train* (08:30-20:00) south to Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. It is the economic center of the 'Last Frontier' and the largest transportation hub in the state. The Alaska Aurora Winter Train is very famous locally and runs only on weekends. It passes through the Alaska Range and Denali. It travels at a leisurely pace, allowing you to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery of golden and green landscapes along the way. You will arrive in Anchorage in the evening. Today, you can get plenty of rest to recover from the fatigue of the previous nights of aurora viewing.
When departing from Fairbanks, you can book the complimentary hotel shuttle to the Fairbanks train station with the front desk in advance. Upon arrival in Anchorage, our company will provide you with complimentary transfer service.
Day 6
Meet at the hotel in the morning and depart by car for Matanuska Glacier. Along the way, we will stop at a large supermarket where you can freely purchase and prepare your lunch for the day. Upon arrival at the glacier, you will experience a glacier hike (approx. 2 hours) led by a professional guide. Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier in Alaska accessible by car. Classified as a valley glacier, it flows like a river through the valley under its own weight, winding north from the Chugach Mountains to the Glenn Highway. It is the most popular attraction between Anchorage and Glennallen. Follow your guide onto this 10,000-year-old glacier to experience the endless pure white landscape and the deep blue ice caves formed by the glacier. Due to the topographical features of the valley glacier, it is more prone to sunny weather in winter than the surrounding areas, making Matanuska Glacier the top choice for many glacier hikers. Furthermore, this area, enhanced by the glacier and Sheep Mountain, has become one of the most magnificent and breathtaking regions in Alaska.
Warm Reminder:

It is recommended to wear a warm down jacket, fleece, hat, scarf, anti-slip snow boots, sunglasses, etc. Please pay attention to your footing for safety.
During the hike, please be sure to follow the guide's instructions and sign the disclaimer required by the park management office.
Hiking equipment such as helmets and anti-slip crampons are provided free of charge.

Day 7
Today, you will conclude your entire trip and bid farewell to beautiful Alaska.

FAQs

1. What are the optimal locations for viewing the Northern Lights in Fairbanks?

Fairbanks is a prime location for aurora viewing due to its position under the auroral oval. Optimal viewing spots include Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Chena Lakes Recreation Area, and Cleary Summit, which are known for minimal light pollution. These areas offer expansive, dark skies away from city lights, crucial for a clear display.

2. Where can visitors best view the Northern Lights near Anchorage, Alaska?

While Anchorage itself has light pollution, several excellent viewing locations are a short drive away. Popular spots include Glen Alps (part of Chugach State Park), Eklutna Lake, and areas along the Glenn Highway. These locations offer darker skies and opportunities to see the aurora away from urban interference, often requiring a short drive north or east of the city.

3. Which cities in Alaska are considered prime destinations for Northern Lights viewing?

Fairbanks is widely known as the 'Aurora Capital' due to its high latitude and frequent clear, dark nights, making it an exceptional destination. Anchorage also offers good viewing potential, especially by venturing to less light-polluted areas surrounding the city. A comprehensive tour often includes observation opportunities from both Fairbanks and areas near Anchorage to maximize viewing chances.

4. What is the best time of year to see the Northern Lights in Alaska?

The optimal period to witness the Northern Lights in Alaska typically runs from late August to mid-April. During these months, the nights are long and dark enough to see the aurora borealis. The peak visibility is often in the winter months, from September to March, when the nights are at their longest and clearest.

5. What unique experiences are included in an Alaska Northern Lights tour?

An Alaska Northern Lights tour typically offers dedicated aurora observation opportunities, often multiple times to increase viewing chances. Beyond the lights, unique experiences can include a scenic journey on the Alaska Northern Lights Train through remote landscapes and exploring the vast Matanuska Glacier, allowing visitors to walk directly on the ancient ice.

6. What unique sights can be experienced on the Alaska Northern Lights Train journey?

The Alaska Northern Lights Train offers a breathtaking journey through the Alaskan hinterland. Travelers can enjoy magnificent, expansive scenery, including vast wilderness, snow-covered forests, and majestic mountain ranges. On clear days, there's also the possibility of catching views of North America's highest peak, adding to the grandeur of the frontier landscape.

7. What activities can visitors do at Matanuska Glacier?

At Matanuska Glacier, visitors can experience walking directly on the ice, often with the guidance of experienced instructors. Activities include ice hiking, exploring unique ice formations like crevasses and moulins, and learning about the glacier's geology and history. It is Alaska's largest glacier accessible by car, offering a unique opportunity to stand upon ancient ice.

8. What phenomenon causes the Northern Lights, and why are they prominent in Alaska?

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are caused by solar particles interacting with Earth's magnetic field and atmospheric gases. When these charged particles collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, they emit light, creating vibrant displays. Alaska's high latitude places it directly under the auroral oval, making it one of the most prominent regions globally for frequent and intense aurora sightings.
