    Product Info

    -What you can expect-
This adventure is designed for the intrepid sightseeing traveler wishing to see as much of the Big Island as possible in one day.

Travel south into Kona coffee country for the first stop at Bay View Farm, a 24-acre coffee farm nestled on the slopes of Mauna Loa Volcano and known for the best Kona coffee since 1984. Admire coffee growing on the trees and learn about the coffee-making process. You'll taste 100% Kona Coffee at a gorgeous overlook with stunning views of Kealakekua Bay and the monument to Captain Cook.

The tour continues as you drive through the South Kona and Ka’u Districts. Marvel with stunning views, alternating between stark lava flows and Hawaiian dry forest visible through the panoramic windows of your tour vehicle. You'll stop briefly at the unique Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, one of the best black sand beaches on the island. Stroll along the beach and look for honu (green Hawaiian sea turtles) feeding just offshore or resting on the sand. Next travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visit the Kilauea Visitor’s Center, the Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, Steaming Bluffs and admire the smoking and steaming Kilauea Caldera. The next stop is Big Island Candies, a signature high-quality candy factory store founded in 1977. Peek through the windows into the factory or browse the selection of gorgeous jewel-box gifts.

Moving on, you'll travel through the quaint Hilo town where you’ll drive along the historic waterfront as you continue on to stunning Rainbow Falls. Next is Waipio Valley, known as the Valley of Kings, which is a place of impossibly steep cliffs carved by plunging waterfalls cascading more than a thousand feet to the valley floor below. Waipio Valley is still home to taro farmers as it has been for a thousand years. Look closely from the overlook and glimpse the wild horses that roam the valley. Your tour ends with a delicious deli-style picnic lunch.

    FAQ

    1. What is the official name often used to refer to the Big Island of Hawaii?

The island is officially named Hawaiʻi, but it is widely known as the Big Island to distinguish it from the state of Hawaii and to reflect its significantly larger size compared to the other Hawaiian islands. It is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, offering vast and diverse landscapes.

    2. What distinctive natural attractions, like black sand beaches or volcanic landscapes, can be found on the Big Island?

The Big Island is renowned for its diverse natural wonders. Visitors can explore stunning black sand beaches, such as Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, formed by volcanic activity. The island also features active volcanoes, stark lava flows, and unique Hawaiian dry forests, offering dramatic and varied landscapes unlike anywhere else in the world.

    3. How does the Kona region relate geographically to the entire Big Island of Hawaii?

The Kona region is located on the western side of the Big Island of Hawaii, encompassing the sunny leeward coast. It is one of the island's primary districts, famous for its calm waters, coffee farms, and historical sites. The Big Island itself is composed of five volcanoes, with Kona sitting on the slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa.

    4. Which airports serve as the primary entry points for visitors arriving on the Big Island of Hawaii?

The Big Island of Hawaii has two main airports for commercial flights: Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) on the west side, serving the Kona district, and Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the east side, serving the Hilo area. Most visitors arrive via KOA due to its proximity to popular resorts and attractions.

    5. What are the key experiences visitors can have at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island?

At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visitors can witness the raw power of creation and destruction. Key experiences include driving along Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road, viewing Kīlauea caldera from overlooks, exploring lava tubes such as Thurston Lava Tube, and hiking across volcanic landscapes with steam vents. It offers a unique opportunity to observe active volcanic processes.

    6. What can visitors expect when experiencing traditional Kona coffee tasting with views of Kealakekua Bay?

Visitors enjoying a traditional Kona coffee tasting can expect to sample world-renowned coffee grown in the unique volcanic soil of the Kona district. This experience is often paired with breathtaking panoramic views of Kealakekua Bay, a historically significant area known for its pristine waters and marine life. It combines a sensory delight with stunning natural scenery.

    7. What are the primary ways to navigate and explore the Big Island of Hawaii for sightseeing?

The most common and flexible way to explore the Big Island for sightseeing is by renting a car, which allows access to remote beaches, national parks, and scenic routes at your own pace. Guided tours are also popular, providing transportation, commentary, and curated itineraries without the need for personal driving. Public transportation is limited, making independent exploration challenging without a car.

    8. Are specific ride-sharing apps or local shuttle services widely available across the Big Island of Hawaii, particularly in areas like Kona?

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are available on the Big Island, primarily in the more populated areas around Kona and Hilo. However, coverage can be sparse in rural or remote regions. Local shuttle services often connect airports with major resorts or offer specific tour routes, but these are less flexible than a rental car for island-wide exploration. It's advisable to check availability in advance for specific routes.
