Product Info

-What you can expect-
Embark on a day tour of Provence, beginning with a visit to Roussillon. This quintessential French village is renowned for its striking red and yellow ochre cliffs and extraordinary natural landscape. On Thursdays, you'll have the chance to experience an open-air Provençal market - a must-do when in Provence!

The tour will then take you to a panoramic photo stop overlooking Gordes, a Provençal village perched high in the Luberon. Recognised as one of "the most beautiful villages in France", it's a sight not to be missed. Following this, you'll have free time for lunch in the charming village of Fontaine de Vaucluse. Here, seize the opportunity to explore and discover the source of the Sorgue River, a uniquely natural and mysterious location.

Post-lunch, your journey continues to the Pont du Gard. Discover this well-preserved Roman aqueduct, dating back to the 1st century and listed by UNESCO. The next stop is Les Baux de Provence, a celebrated Provencal village perched atop a rock at 245 meters high. Take some time to explore the medieval village, admire the beautiful 16th-century houses and visit the St Vincent Church.

Finally, on the return journey to Avignon, your guide will take you through Saint Rémy de Provence. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the city centre before concluding your memorable day tour in the heart of Avignon.

FAQ

1. What is the optimal season to visit Provence for scenic beauty?

Provence is particularly stunning from late spring to early autumn (May to September). May and June offer vibrant lavender fields, poppy fields, and pleasant weather. July and August are warmer, ideal for coastal areas and festivals. September provides comfortable temperatures and grape harvests, each period offering distinct landscapes and photographic opportunities.

2. Why is Avignon considered an ideal starting point for exploring Provence?

Avignon serves as an excellent gateway due to its central location, robust transport links including high-speed train services, and rich historical heritage. Its position allows for convenient day trips to diverse Provence attractions like the Luberon villages, lavender fields, and Roman ruins, making it a practical and culturally immersive base for regional exploration.

3. Which scenic towns and villages are must-visit attractions in Provence?

Provence boasts numerous picturesque towns. Gordes, a hilltop village, offers panoramic views. Roussillon is famous for its ochre cliffs and vibrant buildings. Les Baux-de-Provence features a dramatic medieval fortress. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has an artistic legacy and Roman ruins. Each provides unique charm and photographic backdrops that capture the essence of the region.

4. What key historical monuments or natural sites should be included when visiting Provence?

Essential historical sites include the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct, and the Palais des Papes in Avignon, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Natural wonders like the lavender fields of Valensole Plateau (seasonal) and the dramatic Gorges du Verdon offer breathtaking landscapes and opportunities for outdoor activities, showcasing Provence's diverse beauty.

5. What are the common transportation options for exploring the Provence region?

Exploring Provence typically involves several options. Renting a car offers maximum flexibility to visit remote villages and scenic routes. Organized guided tours from major cities like Avignon provide convenient, hassle-free exploration with expert commentary. Public transport, including regional buses and trains, connects larger towns, but coverage can be limited in rural areas.

6. Is ride-sharing, like Uber, readily available for transportation within Provence?

While ride-sharing services like Uber are available in some larger cities within Provence, such as Marseille or Nice, their presence and availability are significantly limited in smaller towns and and rural areas. For comprehensive travel throughout the region, especially to picturesque villages, alternative methods like rental cars or guided tours are generally more reliable.

7. What are the viable options for visiting Provence without driving a car?

Visiting Provence without a car is entirely feasible. Utilizing organized full-day tours departing from cities like Avignon is highly recommended for comprehensive coverage of key attractions. Regional trains and buses connect main cities and towns, though reaching smaller villages may require taxi services or local shuttle arrangements. Cycling is also popular for exploring specific areas.

8. What are the best transportation methods to reach Avignon before starting a Provence tour?

Avignon is well-connected for travelers. High-speed TGV trains from Paris, Lyon, and Marseille arrive at Avignon TGV station. From there, a short regional train connects to Avignon Centre. Alternatively, flying into Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) and then taking a shuttle or train to Avignon is a common and efficient approach for reaching the city.
