Tsunami

A tsunami is a series of powerful and destructive ocean waves caused by a large, sudden displacement of water, often from an underwater earthquake, volcanic eruption, or landslide. These waves move through the entire water column, unlike wind-driven waves, and can travel vast distances across entire ocean basins at speeds of hundreds of miles per hour. As tsunamis approach the shore, they slow down, their height increases dramatically, and they can cause widespread devastation by inundating coastal areas with floodwaters, debris, and strong currents. Most tsunamis are triggered by strong earthquakes (at least magnitude 6.5) that occur beneath or near the ocean floor, causing vertical movement of the seafloor. Both coastal and underwater landslides can displace large volumes of water, generating tsunami waves. Violent underwater or coastal volcanic eruptions can also displace water and create tsunamis.

Notable events include the devastating tsunami from the 1964 Alaskan earthquake and the 1946 tsunami that struck Hawaii, both originating from major subduction zone earthquakes.
