Discover the hidden stories and layered history behind San Antonio’s most recognizable landmarks on a small-group walking experience led by Victor, your local storyteller.
Begin outside The Emily Morgan Hotel near Alamo Plaza and explore the historic Houston Street corridor, including Hotel Gibbs, the former federal building, the Woolworth Building, the Menger Hotel, and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Enter the Alamo Church with your reserved timed-entry ticket and learn how Mission San Antonio de Valero became known as the Alamo. Hear stories of Indigenous communities, Spanish settlement, the mission era, and the events surrounding the 1836 battle.
Continue to the River Walk and board your included narrated GO RIO cruise. From the water, see historic bridges, public art, theaters, hotels, and modern landmarks while learning how the San Antonio River sustained early communities and later helped reshape downtown.
After the cruise, walk toward the Tower of the Americas. Along the way, Victor shares stories from Hemisfair 1968, the Hilton Palacio del Rio, the historic Fairmount Hotel move, and other events connecting San Antonio history with politics and Hollywood. Tower admission is included, allowing you to enjoy panoramic views from the observation deck.
Continue through La Villita Historic Arts Village, past the Arneson River Theatre, Marriage Island, the Canary Islanders Monument, Bexar County Courthouse, and Main Plaza. The experience concludes near San Fernando Cathedral, where you will hear how Spanish, Indigenous, Mexican, and Canary Islander communities shaped the city, along with the long-debated story surrounding remains said to be connected to Alamo defenders. Cathedral interior access may be limited because it remains an active place of worship.
The experience lasts approximately 3.5 to 4 hours and includes about 2 miles of walking, with rest stops and time for photographs, questions, and conversation. Comfortable walking shoes and a moderate level of physical fitness are recommended.
