    Product Info

    • 'Ko-Iga' (Old Iga) is considered the pinnacle of historical pottery, celebrated as the 'exceptional beauty' of the tea ceremony world, particularly during the Azuchi-Momoyama period when figures like Sen no Rikyu, Oda Nobunaga, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi were active. Through one-on-one guidance from a craftsman who hand-built one of Japan's largest six-chamber climbing kilns, you can experience creating 'Awaji Iga,' a revival of the pottery used in tea ceremonies of that era. Ko-Iga is fired for several days at an unparalleled, world-record temperature of 1400°C. This process causes the shapes to warp and sometimes crack from the impact of the firewood, but this only enhances its absolute presence and aesthetic, which is why it is called 'exceptional beauty.' (*Campfires are 250°C–450°C; blast furnaces are 1500°C) Awaji Iga aims to revive the Ko-Iga tradition. Because we value the hidden processes and intrinsic value, we do not use modern tools like burners or thermometers, nor do we use glazes that vitrify the surface. During the Sengoku period, wars were fought across Japan, but few truly desired them. Tea ceremonies served as secret meeting places to avoid conflict. It is said that Ko-Iga was used as the special equipment for these high-stakes tea ceremonies, where success meant avoiding war and failure meant battle. At Tsurugi Kiln, you can experience the revival of Ko-Iga and create your own Awaji Iga vessels, just like those used in the tea ceremonies that once shaped history and determined life and death. *The actual experience covers the forming process only. You are welcome to visit and witness the powerful scene of the kiln firing, which takes place over four days and nights in February. We invite you to visit Awaji Island three times to fully enjoy the experience: for the forming process, the February kiln firing, and to pick up your finished work from April onwards. ■ Itinerary 1. Decide what to create 2. Knead the clay 3. Form the piece (coiling, hand-building, ball-forming) *The actual experience covers the forming process only. You can observe your own creations during the February kiln firing. *Since the firing happens only once a year in February, your finished work will be available for pickup from spring onwards.
