    Product Info

    • Shichi Castle Ruins is said to have once been home to Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s strategist, Kuroda Kanbei, and Kato Yoshiaki, one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake. This guided tour of the Shichi Castle Ruins is led by the representative of the Shichi Castle Preservation Society, who works tirelessly every day to protect this precious historical site that served as a key base for the Awaji Navy under Hideyoshi! Located in Shichi, Minamiawaji City, near the Seto Inland Sea and the Naruto Strait, Shichi Castle is said to have been built by Suga Izumi-no-kami Michitada during the Kamakura period and was opened following Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s conquest of Awaji in 1581. Afterward, it was guarded by his vassal Kuroda Kanbei (Kuroda Yoshitaka), and from 1585, Kato Yoshiaki, one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake, became the lord of the castle. As one of the bases for the Awaji Navy, Shichi Castle played a significant role in Hideyoshi’s campaigns in Kyushu, Odawara, and Korea. There is no doubt that Awaji Island and Shichi Castle were vital naval hubs for Hideyoshi. However, this precious historical site, once home to Kuroda Kanbei and Kato Yoshiaki, had been swallowed by bamboo forests in recent years and was nearly forgotten by the locals. That was when the local volunteer group, the Shichi Castle Preservation Society, stood up, fearing that these valuable ruins would disappear forever! For the past five years, they have been working daily to clear the bamboo forest, create paths, and install signs so that many people, not just locals, can learn about and pass on the history of Shichi Castle to future generations. This tour is led by Mr. Sekiguchi, the representative of the Shichi Castle Preservation Society, who has a deeper passion for the castle than anyone else! Development of the Shichi Castle Ruins is currently ongoing, and recently, remnants such as period wells and stones believed to be from old gorinto (five-ring pagodas) have been discovered one after another. Who knows, you might even be the one to discover an important artifact during your tour! ■ Experience Schedule (for 10:00 departure) 10:00 Meet at the parking lot (North side of Shichi Castle Ruins, across the street from the main entrance of Super Marunaka *see photo below) 10:00–10:05 Move to the main castle ruins, using the handmade signs as a guide 10:05–10:15 Explanation of the history and features of Shichi Castle by the guide 10:15–10:55 View ruins such as the Taiko Stone, turret sites, and old wells, then walk around the moat to Ise Shrine and Shomei-ji Temple 10:55–11:00 Return to the parking lot and dismiss
