Product Info

  • Approximately 70% of domestically produced incense in Japan is made on Awaji Island. The Ei district, in particular, is home to many manufacturers, and you can smell the pleasant scent of incense as you walk through the town. It has even been selected as one of the '100 Soundscapes of Japan' by the Ministry of the Environment. Visit an incense manufacturer that has been preserving traditional handmade methods since its founding in 1905 (Meiji 38). Learn about the history of Awaji Island incense, knowledge of fragrances, and the manufacturing process from a 'Koushi' (incense master). This is a valuable experience where you can learn from and be lectured by veteran craftsmen while trying out parts of the production process yourself. At an incense manufacturer on Awaji Island, which accounts for about 70% of the domestic incense market, you will learn the basics of incense from a 'Koushi' (incense master), including the history of Awaji Island incense making, knowledge of fragrances, and traditional manufacturing processes. After that, you will receive a lecture from a veteran craftsman and experience part of the actual production process. This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the craftsmen! *The experience includes 'Bonkiri' (tray cutting) and 'Namatsuke' (raw shaping).
  • 【Awaji Island, the birthplace of incense making: Ei】
  • Ei, also known as Ei-ura, was the most prosperous port on Awaji Island, thriving with the shipping industry (maritime transport and commerce) since the early Edo period. However, in winter, the port was often closed due to seasonal winds, making work impossible. Men would leave their homes for about half a year to work elsewhere. Incense making began as a side job for women to cope with the winter season, supported by the climate conditions of Ei-ura and its advantageous location for importing raw materials and transporting finished products.
  • 【Coincidence? The History of Fragrance】
  • According to the Nihon Shoki, in 595 AD, during the reign of Empress Suiko (aunt of Prince Shotoku), residents found a piece of wood washed up on the shore of Awaji Island and burned it casually. It emitted a fragrant scent, so they hurriedly pulled it from the fire and presented it to the Imperial Court. It is said that the Kannon statue at Horyu-ji Temple was carved from this fragrant wood. The fragrant wood is still cherished and enshrined as the deity of the Kareki Shrine.
  • 【Incense Manufacturing Process】
  • ① Mixing, Stirring, and Kneading Mix the ingredients according to the type of incense, and after stirring, knead them while strictly controlling temperature and humidity, adding dyes and water. *The base material for incense is powder from the bark of the 'Tabu' tree, a type of Lauraceae, mixed with various fragrant woods and spices. ② Making the 'Neridama' (Kneaded Ball) Form the mixture created in step ① into a cylindrical shape with a diameter of about 30cm. This block-like mass is called a 'Neridama'. ③ Extrusion and Cutting Put the 'Neridama' into an extruder and push it through metal holes called 'Sugane' to make long string-like shapes. (Bonkiri: Tray cutting) Collect the string-like material on a tray and cut it using a bamboo spatula. ④ Shaping (Namatsuke: Raw shaping) Arrange the string-like material on a drying board without gaps, cut to the specified length (Dogiri: Body cutting), and straighten the shape. ⑤ Drying Move the drying board to a drying room and let the string-like material dry naturally in the west wind. Drying takes about 3-5 days. ⑥ Bundling and Packaging
