Pink Lake, also known as Hutt Lagoon, gets its striking pink color from the presence of a microalgae called Dunaliella salina. This algae produces high levels of beta-carotene, a red pigment, as a protective mechanism against the lagoon's extremely high salinity and intense sunlight. The concentration of this pigment gives the water its vibrant pink to red hues.
Swimming in Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) is generally not recommended or permitted due to several factors. The lagoon has extremely high salinity, which can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Additionally, it is a commercial aquaculture site for beta-carotene production, making public recreational activities like swimming unsuitable for safety and environmental protection.
A Kalbarri scenic flight offers breathtaking aerial views of several natural wonders. You can witness the dramatic Murchison River Gorges, with their ancient rock formations carved by the river. The flight also glides over the rugged Coastal Cliffs, showcasing their vibrant red hues against the turquoise Indian Ocean, and provides a unique perspective of the world-famous Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon).
The most vibrant pink hues of Hutt Lagoon are typically best viewed during mid-morning to mid-afternoon on a clear, sunny day. The intensity of the color can vary depending on cloud cover, time of day, and the amount of beta-carotene produced by the algae. Bright sunlight helps to bring out the deepest and most dazzling pinks.
A scenic flight provides an unparalleled aerial perspective, allowing you to appreciate the vast scale and intricate details of Kalbarri's natural landscapes. From above, you can fully grasp the stunning contrast between the glowing red Coastal Cliffs and the ocean, as well as the expansive, artistic patterns of the Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon). This bird's-eye view highlights geological formations and the lake's color variations in a way not possible from the ground.
A Kalbarri scenic flight, specifically designed to showcase the Murchison River Gorges, Coastal Cliffs, and Pink Lake, typically lasts for approximately 45 minutes. This duration allows for comprehensive viewing of these key natural attractions from an aerial perspective.
Pink Lake, or Hutt Lagoon, is located approximately 30 kilometers north of Port Gregory and about 60 kilometers south of Kalbarri along Western Australia's Coral Coast. It is situated inland from the coastline, easily identifiable by its distinct pink color visible from both the ground and especially from an aerial vantage point.
When viewed from above, Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) becomes a dazzling spectacle due to its immense size and the varied, intense shades of pink, red, and sometimes even purple. The aerial perspective reveals intricate patterns created by salt harvesting ponds and natural evaporation, contrasting beautifully with the surrounding blue ocean and green landscape. This bird's-eye view highlights the full artistic grandeur of this natural phenomenon.
