Product Info

  • National Treasure Oura Cathedral

Formally known as the 'Church of the 26 Martyrs of Japan,' the cathedral was completed on February 19, 1865, during a time when Christianity was still banned in Japan. On March 17, 1865, it became the site where Hidden Christians, who had practiced their faith in secret for approximately 250 years, revealed their faith. In 1933 (Showa 8), it was designated as a National Treasure under the National Treasure Preservation Act. In 1953 (Showa 28), it was designated as a National Treasure under the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties as the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan. Since April 1, 2018, the Latin Seminary (a National Important Cultural Property built in 1875/Meiji 8) and the Former Archbishop's House (a Prefectural Important Cultural Property built in 1915/Taisho 4), both located on the same grounds, have been operated as the Christian Museum. In the same year, it was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site as part of the 'Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Region.'
