Enjoy smelt ice fishing during the winter around Lake Ogawara in Aomori Prefecture. Lake Ogawara boasts the largest population of smelt in Japan! The Anenuma smelt fishing site, connected by a waterway, is characterized by its high fish density and shallow water, making it incredibly easy to fish. For this tour, we handle everything from drilling holes and setting up/taking down tents to preparing the fishing gear. You can participate empty-handed. After receiving a lecture on safety and fishing techniques, you can start fishing right away, so even beginners can feel at ease. You can have the smelt you catch deep-fried on-site and enjoy them. Freshly caught smelt are exceptionally delicious! When you are done fishing, you can leave without having to clean up. The tour runs roughly from mid-January to the end of February. Please note that the schedule may shift slightly depending on the ice conditions. *The tour may be canceled in case of bad weather.

Lake Ogawara, connected by a waterway, has the largest smelt population in Japan! At the Anenuma smelt fishing site, smelt continuously enter from Lake Ogawara due to spawning migration. The water is shallow, about 3m deep, making it an easy fishing spot for beginners.

There is no need for troublesome tent setup or gear preparation. We take care of all the preparation and cleanup. We also provide a lecture on how to fish, so beginners can participate with peace of mind.

You can sample the smelt you caught on the tour deep-fried. Freshly caught smelt have no fishy odor and are exceptionally delicious, so we highly recommend you try them. If a food truck is available, you can also have them made into pizza for an additional fee. Smelt pizza is also exquisite!
