Sanxiantai is a famous landmark in Taitung, consisting of a small offshore island connected by an eight-arch bridge. Legend has it that the Eight Immortals, including Lü Dongbin, He Xiangu, and Li Tieguai, rested here, thus giving it the name 'Sanxiantai' (Three Immortals). The island is characterized by unique geological formations like sea-eroded trenches and potholes. The distinctive cross-sea bridge allows visitors to walk onto the island, experiencing the sea breeze and magnificent rock formations up close. It's an excellent spot for watching the sunrise and coastal scenery.
Taitung is one of Taiwan's most ethnically diverse regions. Among its indigenous peoples, the Amis are the most populous group in Taitung County, primarily residing in the coastal plains and river valleys. Other groups include the Puyuma, Rukai, Bunun, Paiwan, and Tao (Yami) peoples, each preserving unique cultures and traditions, collectively contributing to Taitung's rich and diverse cultural landscape.
The Amis are the most populous indigenous group in Taiwan, with a long and rich history. Their ancestors are believed to have originated in eastern Taiwan. Later, due to factors like tribal expansion, resource seeking, and conflicts, they gradually migrated north and south, forming the settlements widely distributed across the East Rift Valley and coastal areas today. The Amis are renowned for their matrilineal society, age-grade system, and Harvest Festival, showcasing unique cultural heritage.
The primary indigenous group residing in Chenggong Township, Taitung, is the Amis. Chenggong is located on Taitung's east coast, bordering the Pacific Ocean, and is part of the Amis' traditional territory. In addition to the Amis, a few other ethnic groups also live in the township, collectively developing a local culture that blends fishing traditions with indigenous characteristics. Bishilinan Village is a significant Amis settlement within Chenggong Township.
To reach downtown Taitung, visitors can choose to travel by train, plane, or bus. Taking a train to Taitung Station is a common choice, with direct Puyuma or Taroko Express trains available from western Taiwan. If departing from the north, flying to Taitung Fengnian Airport is also an option. Upon arriving in downtown Taitung, participating in East Coast tours often includes pick-up services from downtown accommodations or the train station, eliminating the hassle of planning your own transportation.
In downtown Taitung, besides the pick-up services provided by tours, visitors have various short-distance transportation options. Taxis or rental scooters and electric bikes can be used for getting around the city and exploring nearby attractions flexibly. Additionally, Taitung city has a bus service, although the frequency may not be as high as in major metropolitan areas, it connects key transportation hubs and popular tourist spots. Bicycle rentals are also a popular eco-friendly choice.
Visiting Bishilinan Village offers an in-depth experience of the Amis people's unique marine culture and wisdom. Recommended activities include: participating in village tours to hear local legends; watching traditional Amis song and dance performances; trying your hand at making traditional Amis handicrafts, such as driftwood sheep and 'lover's bags'; and savoring indigenous cuisine to experience their food culture. These activities allow visitors to get up close with the warmth and cultural charm of the Amis.
The European-style seaside guesthouse afternoon tea arranged in the itinerary is characterized by its blend of exotic architectural style and the magnificent sea views of Taitung's East Coast. This unique combination offers a tranquil and romantic break, adding a touch of leisure and luxury to your journey.
