Hamburg is much more than Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie. On this guided tour, you will discover modernist architecture between 1880 and 1960 – a time when the face of the city changed fundamentally.
Together, we will trace how different currents of Modernism developed and competed with each other. Expressionism, Heimatschutz, Neoclassicism, and New Objectivity are just as much the focus as the question of why architecture is far more than the construction of buildings. It is an expression of the social, political, and cultural ideas of its time.
A special focus is on the works of Fritz Schumacher, Fritz Höger and Richard Kuöhl. Their buildings continue to shape Hamburg to this day and influence the city's architecture to the present.
This guided tour combines architecture, urban history, art history, and the history of ideas in a lively walking tour – explained in an understandable way and with many surprising details.
Route
The guided tour begins at the Rappolthaus on Mönckebergstraße. From there, the route leads across the Altstädter Hof to the Sprinkenhof, continues through the Chilehaus to Burchardplatz, and then ends at Domplatz. If the opportunity arises, we can also go inside St. Peter's or St. Jacob's Church.
About me
My name is Albert, I am 25 years old, and I studied history at the University of Hamburg. My goal is to convey architecture not as a dry collection of architectural styles, but as an exciting story about people, ideas, and social change.
Participants can expect not a lecture, but a lively guided tour with vivid explanations, lots of enthusiasm, and an expressive presentation. Even in the midst of Hamburg's city traffic, you won't miss a word.
**Important notice:** This is a private guided tour. Please contact me before booking so that we can coordinate the exact time and, if possible, the date individually.
