Product Info

The Giriama are one of the nine sub-tribes of the Mijikenda people who inhabit Kenya’s coastal region. This trip offers a rare opportunity to step into an African village for an unforgettable, authentic, and un-staged experience. You will interact with the locals, eat what they eat, join in their activities, and share conversations in their own way.

The tour opens a door into the daily lives of villagers, allowing you to understand their way of life from their perspective. What makes this experience truly special is that it is not rushed, over-commercialized, or staged—it is natural and real. The scenic landscape, fresh air, and the warm smiles of kind-hearted villagers create a deeply therapeutic journey for any traveler.

Important Information
You will need a vehicle to pick you up from your hotel, drive you through the village, and return you after the tour. The transfer cost is not included and will be discussed after booking, as it varies by hotel location. Guests are also encouraged to carry small school supplies or simple gifts for the children during the village and school visit, adding a meaningful touch to the interaction.

Tour Highlights

Stop 1: Ibiza Market
Your journey begins at the bustling Ibiza Market, an open-air hub of trade and daily life. Here, locals sell everything from fresh fish and food items to clothing, providing a lively introduction to community living.

Stop 2: Local School
Next, you’ll visit a community school shaded by a giant baobab tree. Depending on the time of day, you’ll interact with cheerful students. If you have small gifts such as toys, balls, sweets, or clothes, you are welcome to share them.

Stop 3: Madafu & Ugali Preparations
At a local homestead, enjoy refreshing madafu (coconut water) while learning its health benefits. Watch as a host climbs a coconut tree to demonstrate harvesting techniques, including palm wine tapping. If time allows, you may also join in preparing cashew nuts or ugali, the staple coastal dish.

Stop 4: Traditional Healer (Mganga)
Visit a respected traditional healer who uses indigenous herbs to treat various ailments. Learn how these natural remedies are prepared, and discover how this valuable knowledge has been preserved and passed down through generations.

Stop 5: Dance Arena
Finally, walk through the narrow village lanes to the dance arena, where vibrant Giriama dances await. Each dance tells a story—weddings, celebrations, or farewells. You’ll be invited to join in, sharing laughter, rhythm, and joy with your hosts. Villagers will also welcome you into their homes, offering a glimpse into their daily lives.

Welcome to our simple, happy African life.
