Immerse yourself in the art of traditional Chinese seal carving in a hands-on workshop in Beijing Hutong. The instructor earned a master’s degree in Chinese seal carving and calligraphy from the Chinese National Academy of Arts. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and have received multiple awards. We have been operating for six years, led by an owner with 18 years of professional experience. Our team is dedicated, skilled, and highly experienced.
This experience lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of your design and your carving speed.
At the beginning, there will be a 15-minute introduction to the art of seal engraving, giving you a basic understanding of its history and techniques. After that, you’ll choose a stone you like — we’ll offer some suggestions based on the design you want to carve. When it comes to designing your pattern, we’ll guide you through the whole process. Once your draft is ready, the instructor will teach you how to engrave, and you’ll have time to practice on a sample stone until you feel confident enough to start carving your chosen one. Finally, you’ll print your finished seal onto paper and see the beautiful result of your own creation!
All materials are provided, including a stone for your seal, a silk-covered seal container, and red paste. Take home your finished seal as a unique souvenir. A translator will be with you throughout the session to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
The workshop is located in No.43 Yangmeizhu Xiejie Hutong. This hutong has a long and storied history that dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). It was given its current name, Yangmeizhu Xiejie, during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1871–1908). Since then, it has been known as one of Beijing’s most culturally vibrant streets, once home to many well-known scholars, writers, and government officials. Our workshop is just a 10-minute walk from Tiananmen Square and a 3-minute walk from Dashila. The Hutong is filled with stylish shops selling drinks and handcrafts. After the session, take some time to explore the area and soak up the local atmosphere.
