Product Info

  • What is Jeongjo's Dasobangwa at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace?

Jeongjo's Dasobangwa is a royal confectionery program held at Uhwagwan, the official guesthouse inside Suwon's Hwaseong Haenggung Palace where envoys were received during the Joseon Dynasty. The setting carries as much weight as the food. Hwaseong is a UNESCO World Heritage fortress, and Haenggung was the palace King Jeongjo used on his visits to the city, so the tea table sits inside the same wooden hanok compound that framed the court's own ceremonies. The program brings the Joseon royal sweet tradition back in a form international travelers can taste rather than read about on a placard, and it runs as part of the Suwon Hwaseong Festival, the city's yearly reenactment of King Jeongjo's 1795 royal procession to Hwaseong.

  • What can I do at the Dasobangwa royal sweets experience?

The program runs about 60 minutes and comes in two halves. In the first, you make yullan yourself, a traditional Joseon royal confection built around chestnuts, shaped by hand with guidance in English. In the second, the table is set for tea: six different kinds of traditional royal sweets, the sort once served in the Joseon court, paired with tea and eaten slowly in the quiet of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. It is deliberately unhurried and built for international visitors, kept to a small group of up to 30 people per seating, so there is room to ask what each sweet is and why the court ate it that way. If you are already in Suwon for the Suwon Hwaseong Festival, it is an easy way to step out of the crowds for an hour and spend it inside the palace itself.
