Product Info

Begin your adventure with a 25-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland to Rangitoto Island, the newest volcano in the Auckland Volcanic Field. Formed around 600 years ago, it is now a protected, pest-free sanctuary and one of Auckland’s most iconic natural attractions.

Led by an experienced local guide, journey across ancient lava fields, through the world’s largest pōhutukawa forest, explore fascinating lava caves, and climb to the summit for spectacular 360-degree views across Auckland, the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, and the surrounding volcanic islands.

Along the way, your guide will share the stories that make Rangitoto so unique—from its explosive volcanic origins and remarkable ecological regeneration to its cultural significance for local iwi and the history of the island’s famous holiday baches.

Whether you’re visiting Auckland for the first time, traveling with family or friends, arriving on a cruise ship, or looking for an unforgettable educational experience, this guided walk offers the perfect combination of nature, history, and adventure.

Your Rangitoto Island adventure begins at the Auckland Downtown Ferry Terminal. Please meet your guide 30 minutes before the scheduled ferry departure at Piers 13 & 14.

From here, you’ll join your guide and group for the scenic ferry journey across the Hauraki Gulf from downtown Auckland to Rangitoto Wharf. On arrival, your guided hiking adventure begins as you explore the volcanic landscapes, native forest and unique history of Rangitoto Island.

Your tour includes return ferry tickets and lunch, so everything is organised for your day on the island. All dietary requirements can be catered for—please provide these when booking.
