Product Info

Depart Kalbarri Airport on a truly unforgettable scenic flight to experience the vivid colours of the Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) alongside Kalbarri’s dramatic coastline and ancient river gorges.

Begin your journey flying over Kalbarri township, gliding low along the beachfront before climbing to cliff-top height to reveal the region’s spectacular coastal cliffs, where striking red sedimentary rock meets the deep blue of the Indian Ocean.

Continue past the popular surf break at Red Bluff and through Rainbow Valley, where mineral-rich sandstone often creates shimmering rainbow effects in the sea mist.

Soar inland over a series of connecting gorges, including the remarkable Natural Bridge, before passing the white sands of Lucky Bay and arriving at the brilliant Pink Lake. Covering approximately 70 square kilometres, the lake’s vivid pink hues are created by naturally occurring Dunaliella salina algae and are best appreciated from the air.

After circling the lake, follow the coastline back toward Kalbarri before heading inland over Kalbarri National Park. Fly above the spectacular Murchison River gorges, where the river has carved deep into the sandstone, revealing layers of red, white, and purple rock. Admire iconic formations including Hawks Head, Little Z Bend, Big Z Bend, and the Four Ways Formation before returning to Kalbarri Airport.

FAQ

1. Can visitors swim in Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake?

While Hutt Lagoon is a body of water, swimming is generally not recommended due to its extremely high salinity and the delicate ecosystem. The lake's unique pink color comes from the presence of Dunaliella salina algae, which thrives in high-salt environments. Most visitors appreciate the lake from designated viewpoints or during scenic flights to preserve its natural beauty.

2. Is it safe to swim in Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake?

Swimming in Hutt Lagoon is not advised primarily due to the exceptionally high salt concentration, which can be irritating to skin and eyes, and the presence of specific micro-organisms adapted to this unique environment. The lake is also quite shallow in many areas, making it unsuitable for recreational swimming. It is best enjoyed visually from a safe distance or from the air.

3. What is the best time of year to visit Kalbarri?

The best time to visit Kalbarri is generally during the cooler, dry season, from April to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant with clear skies, ideal for exploring the Kalbarri National Park and enjoying outdoor activities. Wildflowers, including those unique to the region, typically bloom between July and October, adding to the scenic beauty.

4. When is Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake typically at its pinkest?

Hutt Lagoon's vibrant pink hue is usually most intense during mid-morning to late afternoon, especially on clear, sunny days. The color is often more pronounced in the drier months, typically between September and January, when evaporation rates are higher, concentrating the algae that produce the pink pigment. Aerial views consistently offer the most spectacular perspective.

5. How many days are recommended for a visit to Kalbarri?

For a comprehensive experience of Kalbarri National Park and its surrounding attractions, including the coastal cliffs, river gorges, and the renowned Pink Lake, a visit of 2 to 3 days is generally recommended. This duration allows ample time to explore at a relaxed pace and participate in unique activities like scenic flights over the region.

6. Does Kalbarri have an airport for easier access?

Yes, Kalbarri has a regional airport (Kalbarri Airport, KAX). While it primarily serves charter and private flights, it offers a convenient option for direct air access to the region. Many visitors also choose to drive to Kalbarri from Perth, which is approximately a 6 to 7-hour journey, enjoying the scenic route along the Coral Coast.

7. How far is Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake from Kalbarri, the flight's departure point?

Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake is situated south of Kalbarri, near Port Gregory. By road, it's approximately a 40 to 50-minute drive, covering about 60-70 kilometers, from Kalbarri town center. However, for the most breathtaking views of the lake's unique color and expansive scale, a scenic flight departing directly from Kalbarri provides an unparalleled aerial perspective of the lagoon and surrounding landscape.

8. What can visitors expect to see during the scenic flight over Hutt Lagoon and the Murchison River Gorges?

During the scenic flight, visitors will witness panoramic aerial views of the stunning Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake, observing its vibrant hues and unique patterns from above. The flight also typically includes breathtaking vistas of the Murchison River Gorges within Kalbarri National Park, showcasing their dramatic red rock formations, deep canyons, and winding river system from a truly unique perspective.
