Product Info

Explore one of Turkey's fantastical regions on this 2-day tour of Cappadocia. Walk through a land of surreal landscapes and curious rock formations at Göreme, climb Rose Valley, and visit the magnificent, remarkably preserved Kaymakli Underground City.

Day 1:

Start your tour with a transfer from your Istanbul hotel to Istanbul Airport. Board your flight to Kayseri Airport, and on arrival, enjoy a picturesque drive to Cappadocia. Freshen up at your hotel and head to Rose Valley, where you follow your guide on a trek through the greenery and red rock formations.

Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Göreme National Park and walk through its fascinating and unusual spires of rock. Hear about the history of the region and how its approximately 2,500 residents go on about their day-to-day lives.

Next, visit the small and traditional village of Çavuşin. Feel like you've gone back in time as you admire the ancient cave church of St. John the Baptist that lies within the hill.

Move on to Kaymakli Underground City and explore this impressive site that dates back to the 8th century as you meander through its maze of passages. Your last stop is at Ortahisar Castle; marvel at the surrounding stone houses, narrow streets, and beautiful churches.

Day 2:
Depending on the offer you've chosen, you can enjoy free time in the town or take to the air in a balloon flight and enjoy some panoramic views before heading to the Devrent Valley. Tour the collection of striking natural rocks that seem to take the shapes of different animals.

Continue to the town of Avanos and learn about its pottery traditions before you get some time to explore at your own pace.

FAQ

1. Where is Cappadocia located, and what makes its geography unique?

Cappadocia is situated in the central region of Turkey and is an area rich in history and unique geography. It's renowned for its peculiar volcanic rock formations, ancient cave dwellings, and spectacular hot air balloon rides, making it one of Turkey's most popular tourist destinations. The region's terrain is composed of tuff formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, sculpted by erosion into distinctive landscapes.

2. What are the best seasons and months for a hot air balloon experience in Cappadocia?

The best time to experience hot air ballooning in Cappadocia is typically during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer more stable weather, clear skies, moderate winds, and high visibility, which are ideal for balloon ascents and enjoying the magnificent scenery. While winter (December to March) might offer snowy landscapes, weather variables are higher, increasing the chance of balloon flight cancellations. Summer (July to August) tends to be hot with intense sunshine.

3. What are the special landforms and natural landscapes found in the Cappadocia region?

Cappadocia is famous for its unique 'fairy chimney' formations, created by volcanic ash and basalt layers that have been eroded over millions of years. The area also features numerous peculiar rock structures, such as mushroom-shaped, conical, and spire-like rocks, along with extensive underground cities, cave churches, and canyon landscapes like Pigeon Valley and Love Valley, showcasing nature's remarkable artistry.

4. For a first-time visitor to Cappadocia, what are the must-visit classic attractions recommended?

For first-time visitors to Cappadocia, essential attractions include the Goreme Open Air Museum, where you can admire ancient cave churches and frescoes; Uchisar Castle, one of the best spots for panoramic views of Cappadocia; the underground cities (such as Derinkuyu or Kaymakli), to explore the ingenuity of ancient peoples for defense and living; and the picturesque Love Valley and Pigeon Valley, perfect for hiking or photos.

5. How many days are typically recommended for a trip to Cappadocia to experience it deeply?

To deeply experience the charm of Cappadocia, it is generally recommended to plan for at least 2 to 3 days. This duration is sufficient for you to participate in a hot air balloon flight, explore the Goreme Open Air Museum, visit an underground city, wander through unique canyons, and have the opportunity to try an ATV ride or join a sunset tour, allowing you to feel the local culture and natural scenery. If time permits, three days can make the itinerary more relaxed.

6. What are the main transportation methods to travel to Cappadocia from major Turkish cities?

The most common and convenient way to travel to Cappadocia from major Turkish cities is by flying. Cappadocia has two main nearby airports: Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) and Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV). Domestic flights from cities like Istanbul take approximately 1.5 hours. Upon arrival at the airport, you can take airport shuttles or taxis to the towns in Cappadocia. Alternatively, you can opt for long-distance buses, although this takes longer.

7. Besides hot air ballooning, what other unique experiences are recommended in Cappadocia?

Beyond hot air balloon rides, Cappadocia offers many unique experiences. You can join an ATV quad bike tour, zipping through the surreal rock formations for an off-road thrill; try horseback riding to explore the valleys in a traditional way; hike through Rose Valley or Love Valley to appreciate the landscapes up close; or attend a 'Turkish Night' show, enjoying traditional belly dancing and folk performances while savoring local cuisine to gain a deeper understanding of Turkish culture.

8. How were Cappadocia's 'fairy chimney' landforms formed?

Cappadocia's 'fairy chimney' landforms are the result of millions of years of natural processes. Initially, volcanic ash and lava erupted from volcanoes piled up thick rock layers in the region. Over time, the softer tuff layers were eroded by wind, rain, and rivers, while the harder basalt capstones on top protected the rocks below. This differential erosion eventually formed the unique columnar rock structures, narrower at the base and capped on top, resembling fairy tale chimneys.
