FAQ

1. Is Teotihuacan primarily associated with the Mayan civilization?

Teotihuacan is not a Mayan city. It was a powerful Mesoamerican city-state that predates the Classic Maya period. Its builders and original inhabitants are still largely a mystery, referred to as the "Teotihuacanos." The site offers unique insights into a distinct pre-Hispanic culture of central Mexico, separate from the Maya civilization.

2. Can visitors climb the Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan?

Currently, visitors are generally restricted from climbing the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon at Teotihuacan for conservation and safety reasons. However, you can explore the extensive archaeological site, including walking along the Avenue of the Dead and getting a close view of these awe-inspiring structures from their base, appreciating their grandeur and historical significance.

3. Who is believed to have built the ancient pyramids at Teotihuacan?

The identity of the original builders of Teotihuacan's impressive pyramids remains a subject of academic debate. While commonly referred to as the Teotihuacanos, their exact ethnic origin is unknown. The city was a significant pre-Aztec metropolis, and its influence extended throughout Mesoamerica before its eventual collapse around the 6th or 7th century AD.

4. What unique experiences can be found along the Avenue of the Dead at Teotihuacan?

Along Teotihuacan's Avenue of the Dead, visitors can experience the grandeur of this ancient city. This central ceremonial axis connects significant structures like the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. You can walk the ancient path, envision the city's past, and appreciate the scale and architectural mastery of the Teotihuacanos from various vantage points.

5. What unique architectural and cultural sites can be explored in Mexico City's Historic Centre?

In Mexico City's Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can explore the Zocalo Square, one of the largest city squares globally. Key sites include the exterior of the National Palace, home to impressive murals (viewed from outside), the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the exterior of the Templo Mayor, which reveals the layers of Aztec and Spanish history. A guided explanation enhances the understanding of these intersecting cultures.

6. What makes the Vasconcelos Library a popular and photogenic spot for visitors?

The Vasconcelos Library is renowned for its futuristic design and striking architecture, creating a visually stunning, almost science fiction-like environment. 7. Is the National Museum of Anthropology included in all Mexico City sightseeing tour options?

The National Museum of Anthropology is a significant highlight that is available only on the full-day tour option. If you choose the full-day experience, you will have time to admire the precious murals and stone sculptures from Maya, Aztec, and other ancient civilizations, offering a deep dive into Mexico's rich pre-Hispanic heritage and cultural history.

8. Are visitors accompanied by a guide when exploring sites like the Teotihuacan ruins and Historic Centre?

Yes, throughout the entire trip, including visits to the Teotihuacan ruins and the Historic Centre of Mexico, a Japanese guide will accompany you. This provides valuable explanations and insights into the Aztec and Spanish cultures, enhancing your understanding and experience of these World Heritage Sites efficiently and safely.
