A typical Guishan Island tour includes both the island landing and a scenic round-island boat trip. During the landing portion, you'll explore historical sites like ancestral settlements, military relics, battle tunnels, Guishan Elementary School, Gonglan Temple, and the Guishan Lake trail with a professional guide. The round-island trip allows you to admire the island's unique geological features and the spectacular "Milk Sea," which is a rare underwater hot spring vent near the island's head.
Guishan Island is an ecologically protected area, and landing is generally restricted. Visitors typically need to join a guided tour with specific permits to step foot on the island. These tours ensure adherence to regulations and provide expert commentary on the island's history, geology, and ecology. This approach helps preserve the natural environment and ensures a safe, informative experience for all participants.
Most tours to Guishan Island depart from Wushi Harbor in Yilan. To reach Wushi Harbor, you can take a train to Toucheng Station in Yilan and then a short taxi ride or local bus to the harbor. Booking your tour through KKday offers convenient and reliable arrangements for departure from this main hub, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free start to your island adventure.
The optimal season for Guishan Island landing tours is typically from April to October. During these months, the weather is generally warmer and more stable, offering clearer visibility for sightseeing and smoother boat rides. It's advisable to check weather forecasts closer to your travel date, as sea conditions can significantly affect tour operations and comfort.
Guishan Island tours usually operate during the daytime, with specific departure times in the morning and afternoon. Due to permit requirements for landing, reservations are mandatory and should be made in advance, often several weeks prior, especially during peak season. Access to the island is regulated to protect its sensitive ecosystem, hence the strict booking process and daily visitor limits.
The Guishan Island landing portion, including exploring the various sites and walking the Guishan Lake trail with a guide, usually takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. This duration allows sufficient time to visit the military relics, battle tunnels, old school, temple, and enjoy the scenic lake loop at a comfortable pace. The total half-day tour, including boat travel and the round-island cruise, typically lasts around 3-4 hours.
During a Guishan Island landing tour, you can explore significant historical and natural sites. These include ancestral settlement ruins, military relics, and battle tunnels that showcase the island's past. You'll also see Guishan Elementary School and Gonglan Temple. Additionally, the Guishan Lake round-the-lake trail offers beautiful natural scenery, with a professional guide providing insightful explanations for these points of interest.
The 'Milk Sea' near Guishan Island is a unique natural phenomenon caused by an active undersea hot spring vent. The sulfur-rich plumes of hot water mix with the cooler seawater, creating a distinctive milky-white and turquoise coloration in the ocean surface. This rare geological spectacle is best viewed during the round-island boat tour, offering a stunning and unforgettable contrast against the blue ocean.
