The Alaska Northern Lights Train typically offers two main class options: Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome. Adventure Class provides comfortable seating, large windows for scenic views, and access to a dining car. GoldStar Dome elevates the experience with panoramic dome windows, exclusive upper-level outdoor viewing platforms, and included meals and beverages. Both classes allow you to experience the stunning Alaskan wilderness.
The Alaska Northern Lights Train journey is a highlight of the tour, offering breathtaking views of Alaska's hinterland that are otherwise inaccessible by road. You'll pass majestic landscapes, including vast forests and potentially glimpse wildlife. It's a relaxing way to cover long distances between Anchorage and Fairbanks, providing a unique perspective of the Last Frontier and the highest peaks in North America.
The Aurora Season tour in Fairbanks includes three distinct aurora observation opportunities designed to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. These often involve visiting different remote viewing locations away from city lights, using specialized aurora cabins, and dynamic tracking with professional guides who monitor real-time weather and aurora forecasts to find the best viewing spots.
In Fairbanks, public transportation is limited. For getting around without a private car, ride-sharing services (like Uber/Lyft) and local taxis are viable options for shorter distances within the city. Many organized tours, including aurora chasing and Arctic Circle excursions, typically provide transportation from designated pick-up points. For specific destinations like Chena Hot Springs, dedicated shuttle services or tour packages are often available.
An Arctic Circle tour from Fairbanks typically involves a scenic drive along the Dalton Highway, crossing the Arctic Circle. Participants receive an Arctic Circle certificate and learn about the region's history, ecology, and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. It's an excellent way to experience the vastness of the Alaskan wilderness. While not explicitly part of the main 7-day itinerary, it offers a unique, in-depth exploration for those wishing to extend their adventure.
To visit Chena Hot Springs independently from Fairbanks without a car, you can typically arrange a shuttle service directly with Chena Hot Springs Resort, which often operates multiple times a day. Alternatively, local taxi services or tour operators specializing in Chena Hot Springs excursions can provide round-trip transportation, allowing for flexible visit durations. Booking these in advance is recommended due to limited availability.
The Matanuska Glacier visit offers a unique opportunity to walk directly on Alaska's largest accessible glacier. Travelers can expect to don appropriate gear (often provided, like crampons) and follow a knowledgeable guide to explore the ice formations, crevasses, and listen to the ancient sounds of the glacier. It's an immersive, awe-inspiring experience providing stunning photographic opportunities amidst a majestic icy landscape.
The Alaska Northern Lights Train journey typically operates as a daytime scenic route between Anchorage and Fairbanks, providing stunning views without an overnight stay on the train. Accommodation is provided at hotels in Anchorage and Fairbanks as part of the 7-Day Aurora Season tour, ensuring comfortable rest each night after your daytime travels and aurora chasing adventures.
