FAQ

1. What is the '120 rule' in scuba diving?

The '120 rule' is a general guideline in recreational scuba diving, primarily used for assessing maximum depth and dive time limits for single dives without requiring decompression stops. It suggests that the sum of the deepest point of your dive (in feet) and your bottom time (in minutes) should not exceed 120. This rule serves as a simple reminder to stay within conservative no-decompion limits and enhance dive safety. Adhering to dive computer readings and tour guide instructions is essential for safe diving experiences in the Great Barrier Reef.

2. What level of diving experience is required to participate in scuba diving tours at the Great Barrier Reef?

Scuba diving tours on the Great Barrier Reef cater to various experience levels. Certified divers with an open water certification or higher can participate in guided dives. For those without prior experience, many tours offer introductory or 'resort' dives under the direct supervision of an instructor, often without requiring certification. Participants typically need to be at least 12 years old and complete a medical questionnaire to ensure suitability for diving. Specific requirements can vary by tour operator and the dive sites visited.

3. Are there any medical conditions that might prevent someone from scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef?

Yes, certain medical conditions can prevent individuals from scuba diving for safety reasons. Common disqualifying conditions include active asthma, heart conditions, high blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes requiring insulin, recent surgeries, lung conditions, or ear problems. All participants are typically required to complete a comprehensive medical questionnaire before diving. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it is strongly recommended to consult with a doctor specializing in dive medicine before planning your Great Barrier Reef scuba diving experience.

4. What environmental best practices should divers and snorkelers follow when visiting the Great Barrier Reef?

To protect the Great Barrier Reef, divers and snorkelers should follow several environmental best practices. This includes maintaining neutral buoyancy to avoid contact with corals and marine life, never touching, standing on, or collecting anything from the reef, and refraining from feeding fish. Use reef-safe sunscreen to prevent harmful chemicals from entering the water. Always dispose of rubbish properly and choose eco-certified operators who are committed to sustainable tourism. Following these guidelines helps preserve the reef for future generations.

5. How do travelers typically reach the departure point for Great Barrier Reef diving tours from Cairns?

Most Great Barrier Reef diving tours depart from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal, located at Marlin Marina in the city center. Travelers can easily reach this departure point on foot if their accommodation is nearby, or by using local taxis, ride-sharing services, or public buses. Many hotels in Cairns also offer shuttle services or can arrange transfers to the marina for their guests. It's advisable to confirm the exact departure location and time with your tour operator prior to your scheduled trip.

6. What specific safety briefings are provided before diving or snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef sites?

Before entering the water, comprehensive safety briefings are provided for both divers and snorkelers visiting Great Barrier Reef sites. These briefings cover essential information such as the day's dive/snorkel plan, site-specific hazards, marine life to look out for, proper use of equipment, and emergency procedures. For divers, specific instructions on dive computer usage, buddy systems, and hand signals are reviewed. Snorkelers receive guidance on currents, entry/exit points, and how to stay safe in the water. These briefings are crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience.

7. How much time is generally allocated for diving or snorkeling at each Great Barrier Reef site during a day tour?

During a typical full-day Great Barrier Reef tour that visits multiple sites, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours is generally allocated for water activities at each individual site. This allows ample time for both certified and introductory dives, as well as extended snorkeling sessions. The exact duration at each of the three distinct Great Barrier Reef sites can vary based on the day's conditions, marine life sightings, and the tour operator's schedule, ensuring participants have a fulfilling experience.

8. What kind of marine life can be observed while diving or snorkeling on a Great Barrier Reef tour?

While diving or snorkeling on a Great Barrier Reef tour, visitors can observe an incredible diversity of marine life. This includes a vibrant array of hard and soft corals, anemones, and countless species of reef fish like clownfish, parrotfish, and wrasse. Encounters with larger creatures such as green sea turtles, manta rays, reef sharks (often docile), and various species of jellyfish are also common. The specific marine life seen can vary by dive site and time of year, making each visit unique.
