- Itinerary Introduction -
Taiwan's Annual Classic Celebration: Introduction to the Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage Cultural Activities - The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage is one of Taiwan's most historically significant annual celebrations, attracting hundreds of thousands of believers who embark on a pilgrimage to pray for peace and blessings! The pilgrimage route is initially estimated at approximately 400 kilometers. The 2026 pilgrimage schedule, determined by divination blocks, is set to depart late at night on April 12th (11:00 AM on the 26th day of the second lunar month), and is expected to arrive in Beigang on April 16th. After offering incense that night, the pilgrimage will return north, arriving back at the temple on the afternoon of April 20th. The "real-time route" guided by Mazu adds to the mystique and fills believers with anticipation.
Every year, the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage begins at the Baishatun Gongtian Temple in Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County. Devotees walk alongside the Mazu palanquin, passing through Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, and other places, finally arriving at the Beigang Chaotian Temple in Yunlin. During the pilgrimage, devotees follow traditional customs and perform various rituals, such as raising the head flag, boarding the palanquin, and lighting the fire, showcasing the profound cultural heritage of religious beliefs in Taiwan.

—Rules for Pilgrimage—
1. Pilgrimage Procession: Since ancient times, the procession for the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage on foot has been quite simple. A banner bearer leads the way, followed by the Mazu palanquin. Two gongs are played on either side, creating a symphony. To ensure safety, the procession of the incense bearers walks between the two gongs; this section is the "incense bearer walking area," which is the main part of the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage. Besides the large drum troupe and the ten-tone ensemble in front of the banner bearer, the palanquin procession and temple vehicles follow behind. Police vehicles maintain traffic control and ensure safety in the walking area.
2. Pilgrimage on Foot: Pilgrimage participants should cooperate with the traffic control team along the route. Especially when the Mazu palanquin is being carried, which often involves vigorous and large-scale movements, participants should quickly move out of the way to maintain safety and order. Furthermore, participants should constantly assess their own physical condition; if they feel unwell, they should seek assistance immediately and avoid overexertion to prevent causing disruption to the group.
3. Food and Drink Donation: In the pilgrimage customs of Baishatun, aside from the three days leading up to the departure of the head flag for Mazu's pilgrimage, there are no specific rules regarding vegetarianism along the route. As the blessings of Mazu of Baishatun spread far and wide, devotees along the way will generously prepare various meals and drinks to provide free of charge, encouraging and supporting the pilgrims. Please use serving chopsticks and spoons. Please dispose of your own food and drink properly to avoid environmental pollution and causing resentment.
4. Rest Stops: When the Mazu palanquin stops at temples or homes along the pilgrimage route, those taking a break should not stray too far from the crowd to avoid becoming too tired and having no one nearby to remind them to keep up. Additionally, always be mindful of your own etiquette and the cleanliness of your surroundings, and avoid any careless actions that could damage Mazu's reputation. If local devotees offer assistance, be as humble and friendly as possible, demonstrating the proper conduct expected of a Mazu follower.
5. The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage, passed down for over 160 years, is one of the most unique pilgrimage groups in Taiwan, and also the longest and most time-consuming pilgrimage. The pilgrimage route involves disembarking at point A and boarding at point B. You can download the "Baishatun Mazu GPS Location" app to track your location, and please stay in contact with the leader at all times.
6. Service suggestions: For pilgrimage attire and equipment, it is recommended to bring lightweight rain gear, mats, masks, sweat-absorbing sports towels, power banks, eco-friendly tableware, as well as clothing such as sweat-wicking shirts, sun-protective hats, and walking shoes.
